On Tuesday December 19th from 6-9 PM, Rabbi Alicia Magal of The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley hosts one of Sedona’s most memorable holiday festivities…. “Bubbie’s Chanukah Dinner.” ikThis annual event started when Sound Bites Grill owner Michele Moore wanted asked the Rabbi to help share her family’s traditions with the community.
This is a great learning and cultural experience for people to learn about Chanukah and also an opportunity for those who aren’t around family to enjoy a Chanukah dinner this holiday season. Michele shares her Bubbie’s (Jewish Grandma) traditions with fun, food and music.
You will learn the story of Chanukah, light the Menorah, Sing Songs, play the Dreidel (four-sided spinning top) Game, receive a Chanukah gift(a surprise) and Chanukah Gelt (chocolate coins).
Rabbi Alicia Magal begins the evening with explaining the holiday, enjoys dinner with her new friends, explains the story of Chanukah, lights the Menorah (a nine-branched candelabrum used on the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah) with you as she plays her guitar engaging the entire audience to sing along. There is a story behind every candle that is lit on the menorah and the guests share in the stories.
If you have not experienced Chanukah before this is a fun way to experience a series of family traditions that are performed every day throughout the 8-day holiday. Some research show that Chanukah is not a “Sabbath-like” holiday, and there is no obligation to refrain from activities that are forbidden on the Sabbath, There is no religious reason for schools to be closed, although, in Israel, schools close from the second day for the whole week of Chanukah.
Many families exchange small gifts each night, such as books or games. Fried foods (such as latke potato pancakes and jelly doughnuts) are eaten to commemorate the importance of oil during the celebration of Chanukah which you will learn about this evening.
Itzhak Magal is also a great contribution to the evening making sure all goes well and encourages all to participate in . Meet new people and leave with new friends. The evening meal will be featuring Bubbie’s traditional Dinner to include Matzo Ball Soup, a delicious Holiday Salad, slow roasted Brisket, and Potato Latkes with Apple Sauce, Grilled Garden Vegetables, and Dessert.
