It is no secret that Arizona Verde Valley wines have taken their place at the table with the best-of-the-best selections in the country. From the early cultivation of wines in Arizona by monks in the 17th Century to now, the progression of fine wines continues.

Did you know the oldest known winery is located in the “Areni-1″ cave in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. Dated around 4100 BCE, the winery contains a wine press, fermentation vats, jars, and cups. Archaeologists also found grape seeds and vines of the species V. vinifera. The fact that winemaking was already so well developed in 4000 BCE suggests that the technology probably goes back much earlier.

With a climate similar to established growing areas like Mendoza, Argentina, Arizona’s hot temperatures during the day and cool temperatures at night are perfect for cultivating grapes. Add to it that grapes don’t use a lot of water  and we can understand why Arizona is making headlines in the world of wine.

A hop-skip-jump and stone throw down the road from Sedona AZ are the  Verde Valley vineyards, fast becoming one of the premier winery and wine producing areas in the U.S.

The Wall Street Journal and Wine Spectator have called the Verde Valley vineyard wines “rising stars” and bottles of the fine wines are making their way into the upper stratosphere of wine aficionados, including the White House.

Movie maker Sam Pillsbury and rock star Maynard James Keenan have taken up the business in earnest, founding the Pillsbury and Arizona Stronghold brands.

A major reason is because wine production in Spain, France and Italy–the world’s three largest wine-producing countries making 60 percent of the world’s wine–has sharply decreased as less land is being used to grow grapes.

Which makes visiting the Northern Arizona wine country that much more important because vineyards are continuing to grow and produce finer wines with each new harvest.

With the Sedona Wine & Beer Co. offering some of the best local wines and many tasting rooms in Cottonwood and Jerome AZ, Sedona visitors have many opportunities to savor the bouquets of Northern AZ wines.

There are tours that will take you on a full day of wine tasting throughout Verde Valley.
