Sedona vs Scottsdale: Which Arizona Destination Is Right for You?

Share

The Sedona vs Scottsdale debate is the most common Arizona vacation dilemma we hear, and we’ve been answering it from the Sedona side since 1992. Both destinations are spectacular, but they’re spectacular in completely different ways. Scottsdale is polished desert luxury — world-class resorts, golf, fine dining, and nightlife. Sedona is raw natural wonder — red rock canyons, spiritual energy, and outdoor adventure that takes your breath away. This guide gives you an honest comparison from locals who know both places intimately, so you can choose the right one for your trip — or plan a trip that includes both.

Sedona vs Scottsdale

The Quick Comparison

Choose Scottsdale if: You want resort luxury, golf, nightlife, easy airport access, and a polished urban-meets-desert experience. Great for groups of friends, golf trips, and bachelorette parties.

Choose Sedona if: You want dramatic natural scenery, hiking, spiritual experiences, and a slower-paced escape. Great for couples, nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking something transformative.

Best answer: Do both. They’re only 2 hours apart, and a trip that combines 2-3 days in each gives you the complete Arizona experience.

Weather & Climate

Sedona vs ScottsdaleThis is a bigger factor when considering Sedona vs Scottsdale than most visitors realize. Sedona sits at 4,350 feet elevation — nearly 3,000 feet higher than Scottsdale (1,257 feet). That elevation difference translates to a 15-25°F temperature gap, which matters enormously in the desert.

Summer (June-August): Scottsdale regularly hits 105-115°F, making outdoor activities genuinely dangerous during the day. Sedona tops out in the upper 80s to low 90s — hot, but manageable, especially in the morning. If your trip falls in summer, Sedona is the clear winner for anyone who wants to spend time outdoors.

Winter (December-February): Scottsdale has perfect winter weather — mid-60s to low 70s. This is peak snowbird season. Sedona is cooler (mid-50s) with occasional snow, which can be magical but also limits some outdoor activities.

Spring/Fall: Both are near-perfect. Sedona gets the edge in April-May when Scottsdale starts heating up. Both are stunning in October. Check our month-by-month Sedona guide for detailed timing.

Things to Do

Outdoor Activities

When considering Sedona vs Scottsdale, Sedona wins decisively. Sedona’s outdoor offerings are in a different league — hundreds of miles of trails through red rock formations, four famous vortex sites, Jeep tours through backcountry terrain, Oak Creek Canyon swimming holes, and scenery that stops you in your tracks at every turn. Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Devil’s Bridge — these aren’t just hikes, they’re experiences that people describe as life-changing.

Scottsdale has desert hiking (McDowell Sonoran Preserve is excellent, and Camelback Mountain is iconic), but the scale, variety, and visual drama don’t compare to Sedona’s red rock landscape.

Dining

Scottsdale wins on volume and variety. Scottsdale has hundreds of restaurants spanning every cuisine, price point, and vibe — from celebrity chef outposts to hidden local gems to rooftop cocktail bars. The dining scene is internationally recognized.

Sedona’s dining is more limited but includes some genuine standouts. Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill, Elote Cafe (James Beard-nominated), and Cress on Oak Creek are destination-worthy restaurants. The difference is selection — Scottsdale gives you 10 excellent options for any given night, while Sedona gives you 3-4.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Scottsdale wins by a mile. Old Town Scottsdale’s Entertainment District has 50+ bars and clubs, live music venues, comedy clubs, and a vibrant late-night scene. It’s one of the best nightlife cities in the Southwest.

Sedona’s nightlife is essentially “a nice dinner, maybe a glass of wine, and early to bed so you can hit the trail at sunrise.” And honestly, that’s part of the charm. If you want nightlife, Scottsdale is your destination.

Shopping

Different but both excellent. Scottsdale offers high-end fashion, Scottsdale Fashion Square (one of the largest malls in the Southwest), and the Arizona Canal arts district. Sedona offers one-of-a-kind galleries, Native American art, crystal shops, and the unique Tlaquepaque Arts Village. Scottsdale is designer brands; Sedona is artisan originals.

Spa & Wellness

Tie — different flavors. Scottsdale’s resort spas are polished and luxurious — think marble treatment rooms and infinity pools. Sedona’s wellness scene is more experiential — vortex meditations, energy healing, sound baths, and treatments that incorporate the spiritual energy of the land. Both are world-class; the question is whether you want conventional luxury or something more metaphysical.

Golf

Scottsdale wins overwhelmingly. With 200+ courses including TPC Scottsdale (home of the WM Phoenix Open), Scottsdale is the “Golf Capital of the World.” Sedona has a few good courses (Sedona Golf Resort has stunning views), but can’t compete with Scottsdale’s depth and quality.

Getting There & Getting Around

Scottsdale is dramatically more accessible. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is 15-20 minutes from most Scottsdale hotels. Rideshare, taxis, and hotel shuttles are abundant. Scottsdale itself is easy to navigate with clear grid streets.

Sedona is a 2-hour drive from Phoenix airport with no commercial air service. You’ll need a rental car — there’s no practical alternative. Once in Sedona, everything is a 5-20 minute drive. Our Phoenix to Sedona guide covers all the route options.

Budget Comparison

Overall, Sedona is slightly more expensive for lodging at equivalent quality levels, but Scottsdale has a wider price range at both ends. Scottsdale has more budget options (chain hotels near the freeway) and more ultra-luxury options ($1,000+/night resorts).

Dining is comparable at the upper end. Sedona’s activity costs are generally lower — most hikes are free (just a $5 Red Rock Pass for parking) versus Scottsdale’s golf green fees and resort activity charges.

Healing Paws

Best Destination by Trip Type

Couples & Romance

Sedona. The natural beauty, intimate scale, and spiritual energy create a romantic atmosphere that’s hard to replicate. Creekside cabins, sunset hikes, spa experiences with red rock views — Sedona is Arizona’s most romantic destination. See our romantic getaway guide.

Families with Young Kids

Scottsdale — slightly. Resort pools with lazy rivers, kids’ clubs, OdySea Aquarium, Butterfly Wonderland, and the Phoenix Zoo make Scottsdale slightly easier for families with young children. That said, Sedona’s Pink Jeep Tours, Slide Rock State Park, and easy hikes like Bell Rock are incredibly kid-friendly. Read our Sedona with kids guide for the full family perspective.

Adventure Seekers

Sedona — no contest. Hiking, Jeep tours, mountain biking, rock climbing, creek swimming, and vortex exploring. Sedona is an outdoor adventure playground.

Golf Trips

Scottsdale. Not even close. 200+ courses, perfect winter weather, and a golf culture that permeates the entire city.

Girls’ Trips / Bachelor(ette) Parties

Scottsdale. Nightlife, pool parties, spa days, brunching — Scottsdale is practically designed for group celebrations.

Photography

Sedona. The red rocks in golden hour light, monsoon clouds, fall foliage in Oak Creek Canyon, and the surreal landscape make Sedona one of the most photogenic places in America. Scottsdale has beautiful desert scenery, but Sedona’s visual drama is on another level.

Spiritual & Wellness Retreat

Sedona — overwhelmingly. The vortex sites, energy healers, sound baths, metaphysical shops, and overall spiritual atmosphere are unique in the world. No other American destination offers this kind of immersive spiritual experience.

The “Do Both” Itinerary

The smartest play is combining both destinations. Here’s our recommended 5-6 day itinerary:

Days 1-2: Scottsdale. Fly into Phoenix, check into your Scottsdale hotel, enjoy the resort pool, explore Old Town, play a round of golf, and have a great dinner. Use these days for the urban luxury experience.

Day 3: Drive to Sedona. Pick up a rental car (if you don’t have one) and make the 2-hour drive. Stop at Montezuma Castle on the way. Check into your Sedona lodging. Explore Uptown and watch the sunset at Airport Mesa.

Days 4-5: Sedona. Follow our weekend itinerary — hike, explore, wine taste, and soak in the red rock magic.

Day 6: Return to Phoenix. Stop in Jerome or Cottonwood on the way back for a final Arizona experience before your flight.

Our Honest Recommendation

We’re biased — we’ve chosen to live in Sedona since 1992, after all. But here’s our honest take: Scottsdale is an excellent vacation destination that you’ll thoroughly enjoy. Sedona is a place that changes people. We’ve watched thousands of visitors come for a day trip and end up buying property. There’s something about this landscape — the scale, the color, the energy — that affects people in ways that a resort pool, however beautiful, simply can’t.

If you can only choose one and you’ve never been to either: come to Sedona first. You can find resort luxury anywhere in the Southwest. You can only find what Sedona offers in Sedona.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Sedona from Scottsdale?

About 2 hours by car (115 miles). Take I-17 North to Highway 179 for the most direct route. The drive itself is scenic and easy.

Can I do a day trip from Scottsdale to Sedona?

Absolutely. It’s one of the most popular day trips in Arizona. Leave early, spend a full day exploring, and drive back in the evening. See our complete day trip guide.

Which is better in summer?

Sedona, hands down. The 15-25°F temperature difference makes outdoor activities actually enjoyable in Sedona when Scottsdale is dangerously hot. Many Scottsdale visitors flee to Sedona in June-August.

Which has better food?

Scottsdale has more options and more variety. Sedona has a handful of restaurants that rival anything in Scottsdale for quality. If dining variety is a priority, Scottsdale wins. If you’re happy with 3-4 excellent options, Sedona holds its own.

Is Sedona or Scottsdale more expensive?

Comparable at the middle tier. Scottsdale has wider extremes — more budget options AND more ultra-luxury options. Sedona’s biggest cost advantage is that most activities (hiking, vortex visits, scenic drives) are free or nearly free, while Scottsdale’s signature activities (golf, resort spas) carry significant price tags.

Before coming to Sedona it’s always nice to check out the Sedona Chamber of Commerce.
