Stepping Back in Time: How to Access the Palatki Heritage Site

Hidden away in the red rock canyons northwest of Sedona is the Palatki Heritage Site. Occupied by the Sinagua people between 1150 and 1350 CE, this protected archaeological area features some of the largest cliff dwellings and finest rock art pictographs in northern Arizona. Because it is a delicate historical resource, access is carefully managed. Here is what you need to know to secure entry.

Step 1: You Must Book a Ticketed Reservation

Do not simply show up at the gate. To preserve the ancient structures from human impact, visitors must secure a timed entry ticket prior to arrival via Recreation.gov.

Hours: The site is open from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM daily (with shortened hours on Wednesdays).

Phone Bookings: If you’re unable to access Recreation.gov, you can also book by phone at 877-444-6777.

Step 2: Grab Your Red Rock Pass

In addition to your reservation ticket, every vehicle parked at the site must display a Red Rock Pass (available at automated kiosks on-site) or a valid Federal Interagency America the Beautiful Pass.

Step 3: Brave the Rough Gravel Roads

Palatki is located roughly 13 miles northwest of Sedona. While the journey begins on paved blacktop via Dry Creek Road, it transitions into rough, unpaved gravel forest roads.

Drive Time: Low-clearance sedans can make the trip if they drive slowly, but you should allow about 30-45 minutes of travel time from central Sedona to ensure you don’t miss your strict tour window.

Connectivity Warning: Cell phone service completely disappears in these canyons, so download your maps offline before heading out!
